Interview: Thien Hi

A major name in Vietnam, Thien Hi is one of Vietnam's strongest proponent of their local product Vina House. Pushing ahead to not just be the largest Vietnamese DJ in the game, Thien Hi works closely with other industry veterans to promote their love for their music and their dance culture.

ADM: How did you get your start in DJing?

TH: Started my career by playing selecta music at a nightclub, I gradually got the chance to play music as the main DJ thanks to a friend introducing me to NEW CENTURY club in Hà Nội and become resident DJ since 2002.

ADM: From EDM to Trance and even Vina House, how would you say the club scene in Vietnam has changed since you started DJing?

TH: Previously in my generation, the quality of a DJ was judged by the diversity of their music. These days most DJs play very similar music and they are lazy to create their own sound quality & taste music.

ADM: Could you tell us the journey of how to Anti-Skating and how you got it published with Black Hole Recordings?

TH: The Trance Family Vietnam festival with foreign artists invited by Alex M.O.R.P.H was an opportunity for local artists to have a chance to step up and work with top labels, and Alex M.O.R.P.H was the one who suggested it to me and we started working on it.

This is the first product that I used to introduce myself to the international community after many years of trying. I almost gave up, but with the passion of music always burning in me, the music has helped me remind me of what I need to do.

I was not distracted on the path I intended to follow, and now after 18 years I have achieved the first step of the artistic path ahead with my love and magic.

So I thought Anti-Skating was the most appropriate name since on the turntable there is an anti-skating tonearm mode that prevents it from skating. At the end of the day I'm still a DJ so it was a little of an inside joke.

ADM: Where do you think you'll go from where you are now? Is there something major coming along for DJ THIEN HI?

TH: I aim to have a label. As a freelance artiste now I face a lot of struggles so by setting up a label I'll be able to support more local artiste and help push their music our as well! With a label I'd be able to experiment a lot more since it keeps me independent.

ADM: If there's one stage in the world that you wanted to play the most, which stage would it be and why?

TH: Luminosity Beach Festival with Alex M.O.R.P.H! We've been mates since the start so it'll be great to do something with him!
